American School of Douala (ASD), founded in 1978, is an independent coeducational, nonsectarian, nonprofit day school, which provides an English language educational program from preschool through grade 10 following an American curriculum. ASD strives to develop students who will be competitive, self-confident, compassionate, and positively contribute to our global community. ASD provides a supportive, multi-cultural environment with a high-standard American curriculum encouraging students to reach their maximum potential. ASD is governed by a 9-member board elected by the parents. The board meets monthly, and encourages the presence and participation of teachers and parents as non-voting observers. The school year is comprised of four terms extending from late August to early November, November to early February, February to mid April, and mid April to mid June with 176 days of instruction. ASD’s culturally diverse student body and faculty promote cross-cultural relations and exchanges, which enrich and expand global sensitivity and perspective, encouraging the development of responsible caring global citizens.

Organization: The American School of Douala is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. ASD is an active member of the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA).

Curriculum: The educational program at ASD consists of an American curriculum with all instruction in English. French is taught as a second language to all grade level students. Electives offered to students include Physical Education, IT, Choral, Drama, and Art. Extracurricular activities include piano, guitar, Tae Kwon Do, basketball, pickleball, soccer, volleyball, math club, yearbook, photography club, and computer club.

Faculty: In the 2011-2012 school year, there are currently 20 full-time and 4 part-time faculty members.

Enrollment: For the 2011-2012 school year, 120 students are enrolled. The student body is represented by more than 20 nationalities.

Facilities: The school is located in Douala 10 minutes from the international airport. The custom-made facility is two years old and approximately 4,000 sq. meters (44,000 square feet) and houses 20 classrooms, 1 library, 1 science laboratory, a well-equipped IT laboratory, a covered gymnasium, grass soccer field, a multi-purpose room, and WiFi throughout.

Finances: School tuition fees for the 2011-2012 school year are as follows: PK3/4: $7,820; kdg.: $8,980; grades 1-5: $12,260; grades 6-8: $12,500; high school: $15,120. In addition there is a one-time capital levy fee of $5,000, a yearly registration fee of $600, and a yearly family yearbook and PTA fee of $25 and $100 respectively.
